Blackened Tilapia


1 pound tilapia fillets

1 tablespoon ground paprika

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (can also use red pepper flakes)

1-1/2 teaspoons onion powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning (can substitute equal parts dried basil, dried parsley, and dried oregano)

2 tablespoons melted butter

2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a 9×13′ pan with aluminum foil.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the paprika, cayenne, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  3. Place the tilapia fillets into the lined pan. Mix together the butter and olive oil; pour over the tilapia fillets and turn the fillets over so that each fillet, front and back, so that the fillets are completely coated. Sprinkle the fillets with half of the spice rub, turn the fillets over, and sprinkle them with the other half of the spice rub.
  4. Bake the fish in the oven for 17-20 minutes, or until the fish is no longer opaque and flakes easily.
